Solar Water Heater Repair in Cape Coral, FL

Cape Coral Solar Water Heater Pros repairs solar hot water systems of every brand and age across Cape Coral and Southwest Florida. Pumps, controllers, sensors, mixing valves, glycol loops, collector leaks and backup elements are the everyday work of our repair visits.

Since 2010 we have serviced systems from installers that closed years ago, so an orphaned SunEarth, Rheem Solaraide, drainback or batch system is familiar ground. The most common failure we find is also the quietest one: the solar side has stopped working and the electric element has been heating the tank for months.

We diagnose first, give you a written price, and fix most problems in the same visit with parts on the truck.

How we work

Our Solar Water Heater Repair Services in Cape Coral

We repair any solar water heater, whether we installed it or not, and we tell you the price before we touch a wrench. Most repair visits are booked within 1 to 2 business days in Cape Coral.

Every Brand and System Type

Active direct, closed loop glycol, drainback, PV-powered, thermosiphon and batch (ICS) systems all come through our repair schedule. That includes SunEarth, Rheem Solaraide and older systems whose manufacturer is gone.

$149 Diagnostic, Credited to the Repair

The diagnostic visit is $149, and that amount comes off the repair if you approve it during the visit. You get a written price for the fix before work starts.

No-Hot-Water Calls First

Hard leaks and homes with no hot water go to the front of the line. Everything else is usually seen within 1 to 2 business days in Cape Coral and 2 to 3 in outer areas.

1-Year Parts and Labor Warranty

Every part we replace is covered for 1 year, parts and labor. If the same part fails in that time, we come back and fix it at no charge.

Symptoms

Signs Your Solar Hot Water System Isn't Working

A failing solar water heater usually shows up as one of five symptoms, and the first two are easy to miss because you still have hot water. Match yours below, then call us with what you see on the controller display.

Water Is Warm but Never Hot

Lukewarm water on a sunny day points to a pump that runs slowly or not at all, a controller set wrong, low glycol, or a failed upper element if it happens at night too.

Your Electric Bill Rose and Nothing Else Changed

This is the most common hidden failure: the solar loop has stopped and the backup element now heats the whole tank. A dead pump, a failed sensor or a tripped breaker can cause it, and the water feels normal.

Leaks at the Tank, Collector or Roof Lines

Water on the garage floor, stains on a ceiling under the roof lines or a drip at the collector can come from failed unions, pinholes in copper or freeze damage. A wet tank base often means a fitting, not always the tank itself.

Controller Errors or a Pump That Never Runs

A blank display, an error code or an impossible collector temperature, far below freezing or far above boiling, usually means a dead sensor or broken wire. The controller then never tells the pump to run.

Scalding Water, Hissing or a Dripping Relief Valve

Overheating shows up as scalding taps, a T&P valve that drips or hisses, or loud knocking in the roof lines. It usually traces to a stuck mixing valve, a stalled pump in a closed loop or a controller missing its high-limit setting.

Repair scope

Solar Hot Water Repairs We Perform

Most solar hot water repairs involve one of five component groups, and we carry the common parts for each. The cards below explain what fails, why it fails in Southwest Florida, and how we fix it.

Circulation Pump and Controller Replacement

The circulating pump and its controller are the parts that wear out first, often around year 10 to 12. When either fails, the collectors sit idle and the tank quietly runs on its electric element.

We replace AC circulators such as Grundfos and Taco units, swap failed differential controllers, and fit matching DC pumps on PV-powered systems.

Sensor, Thermostat and Backup Element Repair

Most controllers read a 10K thermistor at the collector outlet and another near the bottom of the tank. We meter both, because a 10K sensor should read about 10,000 ohms at 77 degrees F, and replace whichever one has drifted.

We also test the backup element and its thermostat, and reset the element timer so it stops heating water the sun could have heated.

Freeze, Check and Mixing Valve Replacement

A stuck check valve lets the tank lose heat to the roof overnight through thermosiphoning, and a failed freeze valve leaves a direct system exposed in a cold snap. We replace both with matched parts.

Solar tanks can climb well past normal water heater temperatures, so a working thermostatic mixing valve is your scald protection at the tap.

Collector Leak Repair and Glass Replacement

We repair leaking collector headers and fittings and replace cracked tempered glass covers where the absorber plate is still sound. Insulation on the roof lines breaks down in Florida UV, so we replace that as part of the repair.

If a collector is beyond repair, we replace it with an SRCC-certified flat plate.

Closed Loop Fluid Flush and Heat Exchanger Service

Propylene glycol slowly turns acidic, especially after the loop has overheated, and dark or sludgy fluid attacks pumps and heat exchangers. We check freeze point and pH, then flush and recharge the loop.

A loop that keeps losing pressure can point to a leaking heat exchanger inside the tank, which we confirm before recommending a tank swap.

Repair vs replace

Repair or Replace an Aging Solar Water Heater?

Repair almost always makes sense when the collectors are sound, even on a 15-year-old system. A well-built solar water heater lasts about 20 years, but the pump, the controller and sometimes the tank wear out around year 10 to 12.

Use the table as a rough guide; we confirm on site and put the options in writing.

Repair or replace by system age and condition
System age and conditionUsual recommendation
Under 10 years, any single part failedRepair the part
10 to 15 years, pump or controller failedRepair, and replace the other moving part if it is the same age
10 to 15 years, tank leakingReplace the tank, keep the collectors
15 to 20 years, sound collectorsRepair or replace the tank as needed

When the tank is the problem, our solar water heater tank replacement service reconnects your existing collectors. When the whole system is worn out, compare a new solar water heater installation before you spend on repairs.

The visit

What Happens During a Repair Visit

A repair visit takes 1 to 2 hours and follows the same checklist every time, so nothing on the system gets skipped. You get a written price before any repair starts.

  1. History and Controller Readings

We ask what changed and when, then read the controller: collector temperature, tank temperature, pump status and any error code. Those readings usually point us to the right part within minutes.

  2. Roof, Collectors and Lines

We check the collectors, glass, fittings, straps, roof penetrations and pipe insulation, and look for freeze or storm damage. On closed loop systems we test the glycol.

  3. Pump, Sensors and Valves

We confirm the pump runs and moves fluid, meter both sensors, and test the check valve, freeze valve, mixing valve and T&P valve.

  4. Tank, Element and Written Price

We test the backup element and thermostat and look at the tank for leaks or rust. You get the written price, and we make most repairs in the same visit.

Why us

A Repair Team That Still Specializes in Solar Hot Water

Few Southwest Florida contractors still service solar water heaters, so many owners are told to rip out a system that needs a $400 pump. Solar thermal is our core work, which is why we can diagnose and repair rather than replace.

Solar Thermal Since 2010

We have worked on Southwest Florida solar water heaters for 17 seasons, including systems from long-gone installers.

Parts on the Truck

We carry common pumps, sensors, controllers, elements and valves, so most repairs are finished in one visit.

Licensed and Insured

We are licensed and insured. You can verify any Florida solar or plumbing contractor through DBPR license verification.

Maintenance That Prevents the Next Repair

Our $199 annual visit through the solar water heater maintenance service catches tired pumps and old glycol before they fail. After a storm, we also inspect and document damage for insurance.

FAQ

Solar Water Heater Repair FAQs

Here are the questions we hear most often on solar hot water repair calls.

Do you fix solar water heaters you didn't install?

Yes. We repair every brand and system type, including systems whose installer or manufacturer is no longer in business.

Why isn't my solar water heater saving me money?

Usually the backup element is doing the work. Either the pump or controller has failed, a sensor is misreading, or the element runs all day when it should only run in the evening.

If the tank itself is old and scaled, the element works harder still, and a new tank through our solar storage tank replacement service may be the fix.

Can I bypass the solar side while I wait for parts?

Yes, but have a technician do it. We isolate the solar loop with its valves, set the controller so the pump stays off, and leave the tank running on its electric element.

Closing the wrong valves on a direct system can trap pressure in a hot collector, and a stalled glycol loop can overheat in full sun.

Can a solar water heater be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Most can be repaired. Pumps, controllers, sensors, valves, elements and glycol are all replaceable parts, and sound collectors often outlast two or three tanks.

How often does a closed loop system need new glycol?

We test it at every annual service and replace it when the freeze point or pH is off. Many systems go 3 to 5 years between flushes, and any overheating event shortens that.
