Pool Heater Repair
Diagnosis and repair for heat pumps that will not heat, trip breakers, show error codes or ice up. Repair visits are usually within 1 to 2 business days in Cape Coral, and no-heat calls in a cold snap move up the list.

Heat pump repair and installs
Cape Coral Solar Water Heater Pros repairs, replaces and installs pool heat pumps for homeowners across Cape Coral, from canal homes in Cape Harbour to newer builds in the northwest Cape. We work on Hayward HeatPro, Pentair UltraTemp and AquaCal units from 100,000 to 140,000 BTU, and we are licensed and insured.
Pool heater repair calls peak from December to March, when cold fronts drop unheated pools into the mid 60s F and a heater that coasted through November stops keeping up. Most no-heat problems trace back to water flow, airflow, a sensor or an electrical part, and our $149 diagnostic visit is credited to the repair if you approve it during the visit.
Since 2010 we have heated Southwest Florida pools with solar, and we install heat pumps where solar alone falls short. That means we size and plumb the two to work as one system instead of competing with each other.
What we do
A pool heat pump is an electric pool heater that pulls heat from the outdoor air with a fan, compressor and refrigerant, then moves it into the pool water through a heat exchanger. We cover the full life of that equipment, from the first install through repairs to replacement.
Diagnosis and repair for heat pumps that will not heat, trip breakers, show error codes or ice up. Repair visits are usually within 1 to 2 business days in Cape Coral, and no-heat calls in a cold snap move up the list.
Sized to your pool surface area, set on a pad, wired on a dedicated circuit and plumbed after the filter. Installed prices run $4,800 to $7,500.
When a corroded coil or dead compressor makes repair poor value, we remove the old heater and set a new one, reusing the pad and circuit when they meet the new unit's specs.
A heat pump added to an existing solar pool heater, or solar added to a heat pump, with one controller deciding which runs. New arrays go in through our solar pool heater installation service.
Right fit
A heat pump makes sense when the roof cannot carry enough solar collectors or when you want heat on demand regardless of the weather. In Cape Coral, these are the situations where we recommend one, alone or with solar:
Heat pumps work best when the air is above about 50 degrees F, which covers most Southwest Florida winter days. When a strong front pushes overnight lows into the 40s, output falls and run times grow, which is why we size with a margin.

Compare
Choose a heat pump for heat on demand, solar for the lowest running cost and both when you want warm water every day of the winter. The table compares the three for a typical 15 x 30 foot Cape Coral pool, and our solar vs heat pump pool heater guide covers the trade-offs in depth.
| Heat pump | Solar pool heater | Solar plus heat pump | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Installed price | $4,800 to $7,500, plus $500 to $1,200 for a new circuit | $5,800 to $7,400 for 9 to 10 panels | Both prices; one controller runs them |
| Winter running cost | Can add $100 to $300 a month to the electric bill | Extra pump run time, often nothing extra on a variable-speed pump | Heat pump runs only when solar falls short |
| Heats at night and on cloudy days | Yes, best above about 50 degrees F air | No, it gains heat only in sunshine | Yes |
| Typical life | 7 to 10 years in salt air | 15 to 20+ years for quality polypropylene | Panels usually outlast the heat pump |
| Best for | Shaded roofs, spas, quick heat | Sunny south or west roofs, lowest operating cost | A fixed temperature all winter |
Gas heaters, by comparison, last about 5 to 7 years and are the most expensive of the three to run on propane. If you are weighing the long-term numbers, our guide on whether solar pool heating is worth it runs the payback math.
Buying guide
The features that matter most in Cape Coral are the heat exchanger material, the right BTU size and where the unit sits on the lot. Get those three right and the brand matters far less.
Choose a titanium heat exchanger if your pool runs a salt chlorine generator, and it is a sound choice for any pool. Hayward HeatPro, Pentair UltraTemp and AquaCal units use titanium, which resists the chloride corrosion that eats copper and cupronickel exchangers.
Salt air is a separate problem: on southern canal lots it corrodes the aluminum fins of the evaporator coil from the outside. A coated, corrosion-resistant coil is worth paying for near saltwater, along with a gentle freshwater rinse of the coil a few times a year.
Size a heat pump by pool surface area, the temperature rise you want and how exposed the pool is to wind, not by gallons alone. An undersized unit runs nearly nonstop through January, wears out sooner and still misses the setpoint on cold nights.
A screened cage cuts wind loss, so caged pools can often use the smaller size in the table below, while open pools and pools with an attached spa need the larger one.
Place the heat pump where it has open air on every side and its fan blows away from bedrooms, lanai seating and the neighbor's windows. On many Cape Coral lots that means the side yard by the pool equipment, not boxed in under a low eave or tucked against the seawall.
A running unit sounds about like a central air condenser and blows out cold, damp air. We follow each manufacturer's clearance rules so the unit does not pull its own exhaust back in.
| Pool size | Surface area | Screened cage | Unscreened or with spa |
|---|---|---|---|
| About 12 x 24 ft | About 290 sq ft | 100,000 BTU | 100,000 to 110,000 BTU |
| About 15 x 30 ft | About 450 sq ft | 110,000 to 120,000 BTU | 120,000 to 140,000 BTU |
| About 16 x 36 ft or freeform | About 575 sq ft | 120,000 to 140,000 BTU | 140,000 BTU, or a heat pump paired with solar |
Install
A pool heat pump installed in Cape Coral costs $4,800 to $7,500 for a 100,000 to 140,000 BTU unit, plus $500 to $1,200 if the home needs a new electrical circuit. The price moves with BTU size, distance from the electrical panel, pad work and whether an old heater has to come out.
We measure the pool, note screening, shade and wind exposure, and check the electrical panel for space and capacity. Your written quote arrives the same day or next, with the BTU size and the reason we chose it.
We pull the permit and set the unit level on a concrete or composite equipment pad. The pad is raised enough to keep the base out of standing water after a summer downpour.
The unit gets a dedicated 240 volt circuit with an outdoor disconnect, sized to the breaker rating on its data plate. Plumbing goes after the filter and after any solar return, with the salt cell or chlorinator last so concentrated chlorine never passes through the heat exchanger.
We check water flow, refrigerant pressures and the temperature rise across the unit, then set the thermostat or program your automation. Installation labor carries our 2-year warranty on top of the manufacturer's warranty, which varies by model.
We install and service heat pumps from Cape Coral to North Fort Myers and down I-75 to Bonita Springs and Estero, where HOA review often decides where the unit can sit. Larger condo and HOA pools are quoted through our commercial solar pool heating service.
Best of both
A hybrid system uses solar as the first source of heat and the heat pump only to make up the difference, which cuts heat pump run time and winter electric cost. It is the setup we suggest for owners who want a fixed temperature every day without a $300 electric bill.
Four details make a hybrid work properly:
Both systems can be checked on one visit through our solar maintenance and storm inspection service. For the cost of adding panels, see our solar pool heater cost guide.
FAQ
These are the questions Cape Coral pool owners ask most about heat pump repair, running costs and pairing with solar.
Yes, in Southwest Florida's mild winters a heat pump is much cheaper to run than a propane or natural gas heater, because it moves heat from the air instead of burning fuel. On a Cape Coral pool it can add $100 to $300 a month to the electric bill in winter, depending on the setpoint, screening and blanket use.
Yes, with compatible automation. Systems such as Pentair IntelliCenter and Hayward OmniLogic can run solar first and call the heat pump only when the pool falls below the setpoint.
About 7 to 10 years in salt air. Coil corrosion on canal lots is the main reason units die early, so a coated coil, a clear placement and an occasional freshwater rinse add years.
From the mid 60s F to the low 80s F, a correctly sized unit typically needs two to three days of steady running in mild weather. After that, it holds temperature with much shorter daily run times, especially with a blanket at night.
Most homes adding their first heat pump do, because the unit needs a dedicated 240 volt circuit. That adds $500 to $1,200 to the install, and replacement units can often reuse the existing circuit.
Repair makes sense for fans, capacitors, contactors, sensors, boards and flow switches on most units. On a unit past 7 years with a refrigerant leak, a failed compressor or a corroded coil, replacement is usually the better spend.
